The sun’s rays can be inviting, but they also pose risks to our skin. Sun safety should be a top priority, and wearing sunscreen daily plays a crucial role. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of sunscreen, its application, characteristics of a good sunscreen, reapplication, and additional sun protection measures.

Sunscreen should be a part of your daily routine, regardless of the weather or activities. It provides protection against harmful UV rays and defends your skin against invisible damage.  Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including face, neck, arms, legs, and hands. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for your face and a water-resistant sunscreen for your body. Don’t forget to protect your hands too.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Look for these features when selecting a sunscreen:

Ensure your sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Some of our favorites are the Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46, Elta MD UV Daily SPF 40 Tinted, Sunbetter ToneSmart, and ZO Sheer Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50.

Look for broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, 50 is ideal, and water resistance when selecting a sunscreen. One application is not enough though. Reapply sunscreen every 80-90 minutes, focusing on neglected areas. Try to seek shade when possible and cover up with wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and pants to shield your skin from direct sun exposure. You can also buy clothing and accessories with UPF that comes with UV sun protection in the clothing fibers. Here is one our favorites! It is an Australian sun hat so it is meant to protect you against some of the harshest UV rays. It also has UPF 50+ which is the highest protection you can get.

Prioritizing sun safety is vital for maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risks of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Make sunscreen a daily habit and complement it with additional sun protection measures.
