Oiliness / Congestion

Excess oil production that can lead to shine, clogged pores, and breakouts, often influenced by hormones, environment, and skincare habits.

Causes

Oiliness is typically driven by overactive sebaceous glands and can be influenced by hormonal fluctuations, genetics, and environmental factors such as humidity. The use of overly harsh or stripping skincare products can further disrupt the skin, often triggering increased oil production as a compensatory response.

Types

Oiliness may present in several ways, depending on skin behavior and balance:

  • Oily skin – consistent excess shine throughout the day
  • Combination skin – oil concentrated in the T-zone with more balanced or dry areas elsewhere
  • Acne-prone oily skin – excess oil accompanied by congestion and breakouts

Treatment

A balanced, oil-regulating approach may include medical-grade skincare to help normalize sebum production, along with chemical peels such as the ZO Stimulator Peel to refine and decongest the skin. In select cases, Botox may also be used to help reduce oil production
