Which Laser Is Right for You? A Guide to Our Most Popular Treatments

Medically reviewed by Rachael Taylor, PA-C

With so many laser options available, it’s completely normal to wonder: Which laser do I actually need? The truth is, there’s no single “best” laser. Only the one that’s best for your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle.

At Medical Day Spa of Chapel Hill, we offer a carefully selected range of advanced laser technologies so we can customize treatments rather than force a one-size-fits-all solution. Let’s break down the lasers we offer and help you understand which one may be right for you.

Motus Pro: Laser Hair Removal Made Comfortable

What it’s for:
Motus Pro is our go-to laser for hair reduction. It uses advanced technology to target pigment in the hair follicle while keeping the skin comfortable during treatment.

Best for:

  • Patients looking for long-term hair reduction
  • Those prone to ingrown hairs or folliculitis
  • Patients who want smoother skin with less irritation
  • A wide range of skin tones

Motus Pro is especially loved for its comfort and speed, making it ideal for both small and large treatment areas.

Treatment frequency:
Most areas are treated every 4–8 weeks, depending on hair growth cycles. A series of sessions is required for optimal reduction.

Downtime:
There is little to no downtime. Mild redness may occur but typically resolves within a few hours.

BBL HEROic: Correcting Color, Pigment, and Redness

What it’s for:
BroadBand Light (BBL) HEROic is designed to improve pigmentation, sun damage, redness, and overall skin tone. It also stimulates collagen, making it a powerful option for skin rejuvenation.

Best for:

  • Patients concerned with brown spots, freckles, or sun damage
  • Those with redness or visible blood vessels
  • Anyone wanting brighter, more even skin with minimal downtime

BBL is often referred to as a “photo facial” and is a great option for patients who want noticeable improvement without invasive treatment.

Treatment frequency:
Treatments are typically performed in a series of 3–5 sessions, spaced about 4 weeks apart, with maintenance as needed.

Downtime:
Downtime is minimal. Pigmented areas may darken temporarily before flaking off over 5–10 days, but most patients return to normal activities right away.

Tetra CO₂: Deep Resurfacing and Skin Renewal

What it’s for:
Tetra CO₂ is a fractional ablative laser designed to dramatically improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and laxity by stimulating deep collagen remodeling.

Best for:

  • Patients with deeper wrinkles or acne scarring
  • Those seeking more dramatic, long-lasting results
  • Patients who are able to plan for downtime

This laser is ideal for individuals ready to invest in a more intensive treatment with powerful results.

Treatment frequency:
Typically performed as one treatment, with results continuing to improve over several months. Some patients may choose to repeat the treatment each year.

Downtime:
Downtime is more significant and can range from 5–10 days, depending on treatment depth. Redness and swelling are expected during the healing phase.

Tetra CoolPeel: Refreshing Results Without the Downtime

What it’s for:
CoolPeel is a lighter CO₂ laser treatment that resurfaces the skin while minimizing heat. It improves texture, fine lines, pores, and tone with less downtime than traditional CO₂.

Best for:

  • Patients wanting smoother, brighter skin
  • Those not ready for full CO₂ resurfacing
  • Patients with busy schedules who want visible results without extended downtime

CoolPeel is a great middle ground between non-invasive treatments and aggressive resurfacing.

Treatment frequency:
Usually performed in a series of 3 treatments, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, with maintenance as needed.

Downtime:
Downtime is minimal—typically 1–3 days of redness and dryness, making it a popular “lunchtime” laser option with anticipated swelling.
