Pigmentation / Sun Damage

Irregular pigmentation caused by sun exposure, hormonal influences, and inflammation, leading to uneven skin tone and discoloration.

Causes

Pigmentation can develop from a variety of internal and external factors, including chronic sun exposure (UV damage), hormonal fluctuations such as pregnancy or birth control, inflammation from acne or injury, heat exposure, and genetic predisposition.

Types

Pigmentation presents in several forms, each with its own origin and appearance:

  • Sun spots – flat, brown spots (lentigos) or “stuck-on” raised lesions (keratoses) resulting from cumulative UV exposure
  • Melasma – patchy, hormonally driven pigmentation, most commonly seen on the cheeks and forehead
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – lingering dark marks left behind after acne or skin irritation
  • Freckles – genetically influenced pigmentation that becomes more pronounced with sun exposure

Treatment

A customized approach to treatment may include medical-grade skincare such as SB Even, ZO Brightalive, ZO HQ, and Plated Intense; professional chemical peels like the Jan Marini Refine Peel or ZO 3-Step Peel; and advanced technologies including BBL Heroic and CoolPeel/CO2 laser treatments.
