Understanding Filler – The “F Word” in Aesthetics and When It’s the Right Choice

Let’s Talk About the “F Word” in Aesthetics – Filler

In some circles it has become taboo, with people coming in completely opposed to it, or opting for more regenerative options like Sculptra or lasers/microneedling (tbh love this and was an early adopter of this movement).

Today, I want to emphasize it is not the filler that is bad or wrong – it is the hand that is administering it, and the eye/aesthetic of that hand. Good filler is undetectable (you can easily deny it, if you so choose).

At MDS, we like to say that filler is our last line of defense, or the icing on top of everything else. I love it for certain people in the midface, or as a skin booster in fine, radial cheek/lines around the mouth – typically after we have addressed the health of your skin with at-home skincare and built up the thickness of the skin with in-office lasers and Sculptra.

Filler Isn’t a Fix-All – And That’s Important

It is the only product I would put in my lips (although ask me again when we have used PDGF more in other areas besides the under eyes, nasolabial folds, and perioral lines). But it is NOT a band-aid or fix for all concerns.

We often do everything else we can to address the concern before turning to filler. There is also the timeline and budget to consider.

When Filler Might Be the Best First Option

Sometimes filler is the best first option if you need results yesterday and you don’t have the timeline to wait for several months – it can be used as a bridge to give you something immediately before we start on some of the longer-term skin restoration.

Filler shines for being able to customize chin projection (sometimes even more so than a surgical option). And there is nothing like a touch of filler in the lips as we age to boost hydration from the inside out and maintain structure (eliminating some and preventing some perioral lines).

The Role of Filler in Structural Balance

Filler is also needed in some facial structures, even if we have done a full course of Sculptra to help balance the medial midface. If someone is telling you it breaks down every 6 months and you need constant touch ups, they are salespeople and not medical professionals.

Filler lasts much longer than any of us think, and often we can forget what we looked like before. So if you want to be in good hands that will never overdo it on you, welcome.
